Semiotics homework - moving image

Your homework is to write a semiotic analysis of a moving image text. This can be a music video or a film trailer of your choice. Use the notes you made in class aswell as your yellow booklet if you need help on any of the codes. Don't worry about commenting on sound in detail at the moment - we are yet to do this!

Alternatively, you can click Here for a previous blog post I have written on the codes you need to know.

Post your homework in the comments box below and include a link to your chosen video (which must be accessible via Youtube).

Here is an example of the type of thing I am looking for:

Music video: Example - Changed the way you kissed me

The narrative of this music video shows Example preparing for a gig, performing on a large stage and then winding down afterwards. It is filmed entirely in black and white, perhaps indicating that this is a more serious video showing the two sides of performance. It could also indicate that Example feels passionate about his music (as shown by various close ups) and that he feels he doesn't even need colour to show this.

At the beginning of the video we see a variety of close ups to show how Example is feeling before he goes on stage. These occasionally cut to aerial views of the crowd to show what might be in the back of his mind. As the music speeds up, the cuts between shots get faster to match the beat and mostly high angle shots are used to look down on the crowd. At 1.06 the camera pans across the crowd at eye level to show how excited they are about the gig. This is followed by low angle shots of Example as he sings, suggesting that he is the person with the power and the one that the crowd look up to.

The quick cuts and changes between angles reflect the chaos and atmosphere of a gig and the use of lighting also adds to this party atmosphere. At 1.30 there are close up shots of crowd members to further highlight their passion for the music and make the audience (viewing the music video) wish to be there. At 1.42 the music begins to slow down, as does the camera when it tilts up towards Example's face to show his tired expression after jumping around on stage. More high angle and aerial shots follow as Example crowd surfs and the camera pans across the crowd to show just how many people are there. At 2.00 Example is shown through a low angle shot in which he is held in the air bathed in light. This gives the impression that he is the most important person in the room and someone to aspire to.

As the music slows down again there are close up shots of Example interacting with the crowd to show how friendly and down to earth he is before the music quickly builds up and the cuts are fast paced and mostly focussed on action. An over the shoulder shot is used towards the end of the song to give us the same view as Example before it quickly cuts to a 'behind the scenes' shot of him winding down afterwards.

Post your video and analysis in the comments box at the bottom of this page.

Th narrative of the video is the storyline to the film " 21 Jump Street". The trailer shows key moments in the plot of the movie including party scenes, action sequences and comedy in order to show its genre.

At the beginning of the video the straight on shot of the present day wipes to a past shot of the characters first encounter to set the scene. It then cuts back to present day abruptly to show the harsh reality of their situation - wrestling in police training. There are then a series of faded shots in different situations of there harsh training which then cut to an anti-climatic shot of the reality of the situation and the soundtrack stops to add effect.

Then at 1:03 there is an oblique dolly shot as they burst through the door with guns in which the camera travels backwards as they advance. As they enter the building there is an aerial shot of the room to establish the setting. As they exit the car the camera is in slow motion to show power and add comidic effect.

At 1:42 the pace of the shots cutting quickens as it likens to a party atmosphere where the lightening dims and soundtrack changes. There is then a canted angle shot as a motorbike crashes which cuts to a slow motion close up shot of a shoot out which is to show a more serious action side to the plot. The pace then again quickens as scenes of violence are shown constitutively until the end.

  3. Lana Del Rey – National Anthem

The narrative of this video is the re-enact the build-up and assassination of President John F Kennedy, with Del Rey portraying both Marilyn Monroe and the President’s wife, Jacqueline Bouvier and ASAP Rocky as J.F.K. It is seen from Jackie’s perspective. The video itself is mostly shot in a vintage effect with the first few minutes in black and white so that it shows it’s a re-enactment of when Marilyn Monroe sang Happy Birthday to the president. It’s also to indicate that the events being portrayed in this video were a long time ago, hence why I called it a ‘vintage’ effect.
The first few minutes of the video are the re-enactment of when Monroe sang Happy Birthday to the President. It seems that most of the shots are by a handheld camera with the angles changing from high to low, perhaps representing the many different angles the audience are watching from. They also cut a few times from close up of Lana’s face, to shadowed close ups of the Presidents, perhaps suggesting the famous love affair between President Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. Another example of this is a close up of a ring clearly shown on the President’s finger, showing he is married.
The video then cuts to colour with the video still under its vintage effect and as if the cameras being hand held. Lana Del Rey now portrays the President’s wife. The music video contains a lot of sharp cuts between different scenes which are all shown to be positive and happy and show the different events that happened in their life. Close ups of Lana’s face are also used to show the emotion and feelings that her character has in her head. An example of happiness is at about 1:47 in the music video there is a straight on shot where the camera zooms out, revealing the house that they lived in and also their children sitting on a picnic blanket with toys and pets, whilst Kennedy holds Bouvier in his arms. This is probably to give an idea that their life was all perfect and happy. Close up shots of Del Rey smelling pink flowers are also used to show the innocence of the First Lady. 4:11 is an example of the close ups used to show the emotion in Del Rey’s face. It shows her looking up with a slight smile, before looking down straight at the camera with a sad expression. More close ups are used throughout the video to show and clarify the emotion, whereas the quick cuts and zooming out shots also continue to also give an insight to their life before the assassination.
At about 3minutes before the actual end of the video, when the song stops, there are more clips of their life before cutting to the actual assassination. There are a lot of high angled shots of the President and his wife in the car driving down the road. With cuts to Lana’s face showing her happiness before a gunshot sounds and the happy images are replaced with shots of people running and panicking and close ups of Lana looking distraught and also confused. Short and snappy cuts are then used to create flash backs and a reflection of their life, with scenes of them together and with their children to right before the assassination. Maybe showing that the moment before was one of her happiest memories.

The narrative of this music video shows The Wanted falling in love with beautiful women, perusing them and then finding out they are in fact vampires. At the beginning you see a shot of all the members face on and at the end you see them walking away. This makes it seem more like a story as it is like they are the covers of the book.

At the start of the video a black screen is replaced by a high angle shot of The Wanted using a wipe transition. This high angle shot is then changed into an eye level shot using the camera movement tilt. The fact that a wipe transition is used at the beginning suggests that The Wanted are important as they fill the blank spaces in people’s lives. This point is echoed by the fact that the first shot was a high angle shot but this quickly changed to an eye level shot showing that they may have been insignificant once but as a group they are important. The eye level shot also gives you a feeling of their emotions before the song. The fact that it zooms in on each of the member’s faces makes the emotions even clearer. At the end of the video a wipe transition is used again to change the screen back to black and so it could be said that both these transitions are there to simply emphasize the beginning and end of the music video. The fact that the beginning is in tinted blue/grey suggests that the wanted are serious about themselves. It also shows the separation between the real shots of them and the story because the story is filmed in colour. The colour suggests that it is a fantasy. As it switches between colour and the tinted blue/grey it is like the wanted are telling this story. At 0.42 a dolly shot is used to show The Wanted travelling in a car. An aerial shot is then used to show the road making it seem like they are travelling fast. The fact that it is through a tunnel makes it seem like this idea of a story is emphasized as it seems like the tunnel is never ending.

Just before the group start singing the transition fade is used. This emphasizes the fact the group are about to sing. Throughout the rest of the music video the transition cut is used frequently to swap the screen between the different members of the group. This shows that each member is important. It also goes with the beat of the song, showing that it has a strong beat throughout. At 2.34 the cut transitions start to get faster as the beat gets faster. Once the beat slows down, the transitions too slow down.

Hand held shots are used throughout the video to make it seem like the story they are telling really happened and it makes you feel as if you are there watching it yourself. These hand held shots are often eye level to truly emphasize the fact they want you to feel like the story is real. However, at 2.20 an oblique camera angle is used which makes it seem more like a fantasy. This is emphasized by the background as they are on top of a building. The fact they are on top of a building suggests power and the camera angles that are used after 2.20 shows this as a low angle is used. This idea of power is also shown at 1.04 as a low angle shot is used showing The Wanted above a crowd. This shows that people are listening to them and therefore they are important. The cut transitions used here help to set the atmosphere of a party as it jumps from the crowd to The Wanted and back again.

  6. Maverick Sabre - I need
The narrative of this music video shows Maverick on a journey on and around cars and buses stopping off at secluded streets and lonely fields subsequent to the meaning of the song.
In the introduction, the camera pans from left to right showing a moving car on a secluded road surrounded by fields and mountains during a dull climate followed by the camera flicking from various shots as the pitch of the music changes. These shots include a high angle shot of maverick in a dull hotel which suggest that he is unhappy and lonely, also handheld camera shots of the road from the POV of someone in the back seat of the car making the audience feel involved. All these different intro shots along with the dull/rainy weather fit the mood of the song and set the scene.
When the vocals come in, the camera shots continue to change as the background picth changes, this enhances the beat of the music. At 0:49 there is a 'vintage' effect clip using a hand held camera shot, the director continues to cut from the 'vintage' effect shots throughout the video which gives the effect of a home video so makes it more realistic, it also relates to the lyrics of the song about memories and old times. As the drum beat comes in the camera cuts back to Maverick in the car (0:53) as in the intro followed by an oblique, high-angle shot of the sky but in contrast to the beginning, the weather is now pleasant and sunny relating the the lyrics in the chorus "i need sunshine", so as well as the weather, the music has also changed to be more upbeat and positive.
At 1:02 the camera cuts back to the 'vintage' effect but instead of it being dark and dull it now shows a dolly shot of the car moving forward, representing a sense of progression and suggests the journey the person is taking in their life.
At 1:36 there is a canted angle shot of a doll in a widow behind a metal grid, this suggests confusion and relates to the persons emotions, followed by a long shot of an old toy shop so relates to the lyrics of memories and good times fading away. The video cuts to another long shot (2:04) of youths playing football outside a pub showing fun and freedom as a teen which is what the person misses in their life.
At 2:17 there is a dolly shot moving across a bridge and the sun is shining brightly, this connotes relaxation, freedom and triumph. When the chorus comes back in at 2:25 there is another dolly shot of maverick walking face-on towards the camera in a secluded field suggesting that he is feeling lonely but adequate and as he is walking towards the camera singing, helps the audience connect with his emotions.
Finally, at the end of the video (3:32) the camera pans around Maverick at eye-level, looking into the sun suggesting happiness and a sense of achievement, in contrast to the start of the video.

  7. The narrative of One Directions video Live While We’re Young starts off showing the story of a day. They all start the music video getting up in the morning, this shows that we are about to see a narrative of the upcoming day. The video then goes on to show different activities they get up to showing why the song is called ‘Live While We’re Young’. There are many different bright colours used to connote the upbeat, light-heartedness of the song.
At the beginning, the first scene of the video is of them all waking up. Then it takes us to the scene where they’re all sat around in a campfire formation, this is shown by head shots on each of the members. They use various different angles to show the expressions on each of the boy’s faces, trying to capture the element of fun they are trying to get across. The camera angles stay central and level with the boys, showing the equality between them and us, it almost encourages the audience to get up and join in with them.
As the video goes on we see the different activities they get up to. The full body shot of them all walking down the hill, 0.40, gives off the impression of them leading us down the hill to show us something, this then leads onto what they’re going to do next by using lots of different mixed clips.
From then onwards there are many different clips of activities that link in with the title of the song. Driving the off-road truck down the hill, 0:55, there are two different types of camera angle; A dolly shot is used to create the effect of us following the car and then soon afterwards, 1:00, we are transformed into the car with them using a handheld shot, trying to make the viewer feel like they are physically there and looking out into the eyes of themselves.
At 1:50 a low angled shot is used, this creates a scene of the viewer looking up to the boys; in this case it indicates them feeling more superior. This type of shot is then used throughout many different parts of the video, especially the party scenes, trying to make the audience almost feel jealously towards the people there and the people involved.
The most commonly used type of shot is a focused close up, the background is blurred so that we can focus on the emotion of the faces in focus. This helps to capture what the atmosphere is like and how we are supposed to feel towards the video as a whole.
