Perfume advertising - Media Language and Codes and Conventions

We have been working on deconstructing perfume adverts, codes and conventions of a typical print perfume advert and how to create your own advert based on what you have learnt so far.

Below is the Davidoff 'Champion' advert which is the moving image version of the print advert we looked at today. Notice how the man in the advert and some of the images link with the print version. This is common among most advertising campaigns and something you will need to consider for your own work.

Below this are two perfume adverts for a female audience: Vera Wang 'Princess' and Christina Aguilera 'Inspire'. Watch these and think about the conventions of a moving image perfume advert. How is it different from the print version? Is it more effective? Can it reach a wider audience?

In the comments box please explain the perfume advert that you created today and how you targeted your audience. Example answer below:

I decided to aim my advert towards men/women in between the ages of ______. The name I chose was _____, this was because _____________. The message I wished to convey to the audience was __________ and I did this by __________.

Make sure you write about juxtaposition, colour, language, font, pictures, the perfume bottle itself and anything else you can add! Any interesting adverts you can find based on discussions from today can also be added to the comments box.

And finally, the following advert is further to our discussion today...

  1. I decided to aim my advert towards women between the ages of 16-25. The name I chose was “Innocence.” This was because it suggests that the fragrance is pure and fresh. The name reflects beauty. The message I wished to convey to the audience was an angelic and beautiful fragrance, and I did this by making the advert as simple as possible but using a strong and symbolic image. The main image i used for my advert was an angel. However i only drew the wings and the halo because an angel is a character which is too perfect to be drawn and by not drawing it in detail the audience can imagine what they would want their idea of an innocent and perfect character to look like. The background of the advert is white which goes with the name of the perfume, and the image itself is white and gold which are delicate colours. The font i used to write the name of my perfume is a soft one which fits well with the theme of innocence. I drew a feather on the bottle because it is a delicate symbol and represents a new beginning and a new “you.” The perfume bottle is a light pink which is feminine and pretty. It is a delicate bottle which also reflects the idea of innocence. The slogan for my perfume is- “Be beautiful, be innocence.” The use of juxtaposition in my advert is the white of the background and the bold black outline of the wings and the writing.

  3. My aftershave is targeted towards men in the ages of 18 - 25. The name of my aftershave is Kingdom. The message it implies is Strength, Power and Importance as it's making you feel royal. It appeals to the target audience by making them feel more confident whilst wearing it. The background colour of my advert is Dark Grey and Black to symbolise masculinity. The aftershave bottle is Red, Yellow and Black to symbolise royality and it's in the shape of a crown. The font is straight, simple and bold, to fit in with the elegent royal theme. The colour of the font in White to contrast the dark background colour. My slogan is 'Kingdom Aftershave...Crown yourself' The juxtaposition in my advert is a ordinary simple man sitting on a kings throne whilst holding a bottle of Kingdom. This is to show anyone can wear it and feel a lot better about themselves.

  4. I decided to aim my advert towards men/women in between the ages of 16-25. The name I chose was ignite, this was because it sounds good and give a vibe of power and control. The message I wished to convey to the audience was if you used my fragrance you would ignite your life and have unbelievable power and heat in your life like fire does and I did this by using a strong man who looks in control of the situation even though he is surrounded by fire and shouldn't be in-control (it's because of the after shave obviously) the colours I use are the same as fire to continue the link, the font and bottle are both in flame context so to even further continue the connection.

  5. I decided to aim my advert towards men between the ages of 16-25. The name I've chosen is 'Surge' because it sounds interesting and energetic. The message I wished to convey to the audience was that if you wear the aftershave then it will give you a sense of power and strength, so you can tackle and be able to take control of the most difficult situations. The shape of the bottle is like a spark of lightning which symbolizes the power and strength theme. I've mainly used the colours blue and yellow because they are both generally seen as colours of strength and energy. The juxtaposition in my advert is a strong looking man being overwhelmed with the energy and powerful forces exploding out of him, with the bottle appearing beside him which shows that all this mighty power is stored in a simple bottle and is waiting to be released.
