Film trailers

We looked at film trailers in class with a focus on diegetic and non diegetic sound. You should be able to understand the difference between these and also be able to explain how and why they might be used. For example, film trailers often use non diegetic sound such as voiceovers to tell the audience about the film and what they might expect to see. Certain genres of film might have different conventions according to what is appropriate for that type of film.

Here is the 'UP' trailer.

Post your film trailer below and comment on it. Make sure it is a valuable comment showing what you have learnt so far. It can be about various things and does not just have to focus on sound. Take into account technical codes.

This clip of Anchorman is a comedy film aimed at the target of young males about 16-28. The first sound is non-diagetic sound of music that would be linked with a superhero film, this shows its a parody of superhero films and parody's appeal to that market. Then a voice over comes in that sets the scene and introduces the "hero" to the viewer. The first diagetic sound, it is a joke and shows the view it is a comedy. Then it combines non-diagetic and diagetic the music is building up to a climax. Also playing are jokes to intrigue the viewer. Then the plot comes in with a key scene shown. Then the music speeds and shows scenes of distress for the main character and leaves the audience wanting to know more.

  2. Great responses so far.

Jonny - Good ideas but I'm not sure Anchorman is a parody of a superhero film? However, the music does suggest that Ron Burgundy is supposed to be some kind of legend and you have noticed that the voiceover and establishing scene are linked. Good work!

Millie - A very comprehensive answer showing that you have really listened to everything done in class and can talk about your ideas at length. You have shown that you can be very perceptive and comment on things that might not be obvious to a non media student. Good use of media terminology too. Well done!

This clip is from the film an american werewolf in London.
The first sounds in this cip is diegetic and there is light music in the background and then the characters start talking over the top of the music. This helps the audience to understand more about what is going on and who the chracters are. At the time of 0:18 in the clip, when the music stops and the characters stop talking and it is completely silent, this has a dramtic effect on the audience and cathes their attention as it seems something very serious is going to happen so it keeps them interested. Most of the camera shots in the clip are cuts, this connotes to me that the film is quick and unbeat and this is good as the audicence wont then lose interest and they will still be entertained. The 2 main characters are quite normal people so therefore the audience might relate themsleves to them which means that they are more likely to be interested as it feels it is about 2 normal men like us normal people, rather than big famous people that arent like us. The non diegetic sounds of the werewolf later in the clip leave he audience on a cliff hanger, making them want to know more.

This is a trailer for 'Training day'

The target audience for this film are males around the age of 18 - 35. The trailer starts off with tense, upbeat and catchy music which is non diegetic. From this you can already tell it is going to be a exciting film. A narrator then sets the scene by explaining the plot of the film, without revealing the whole story line. The narrator is non diegetic and he is talking above the background music. Around the start of the trailer the narrator is also asking rhetorical questions. This builds up a lot of suspense and makes you feel involved. by making you question yourself. There are many fades to the next shot which implies there will be drama and it builds up tension. The setting of the film and trailer is a poor ghetto neighbour hood which fits in well with the film. You don't know the actual name of the film till the very end. The reason they've done this is to make you carry on watching till the end. There are many close ups and eye level camera angles so show the explosive action that's going to be in the film, this fits in really well with the background music.

  5. Great effort to everyone that has posted so far! Some promising answers!

Just a pointer: when linking to a video from Youtube, you can press share and then click 'embed', if you copy and paste this code then it will show the video rather than the link.

    Hope this works!
